Interesting thought here, I’m hoping that Blashill has been sharping his skills to become a Journeyman NHL Coach. It’s time for him to grow like the roster grows.

I have to throw some credit his way. Last year the defensive structure was better. I was watching some of what was happening at Western Michigan University as Andy Murray stepped down. I was a college hockey blogger back when Blashill took that program way forward. He took a lot of time to talk to me while he was scouting. His work did so much for that program, and he did a lot of good in Grand Rapids too. His old coach, Bob Daniels, was incredibly nice to me as well (so was Rico Blasé down at Miami of Ohio). A lot of good hockey came out of that era. Blashill is a tireless worker. I can say that for certain. Maybe he isn’t the “coach of the future”, but he continues to try and grow in the role. I think Yzerman respects that

Don’t get me wrong I’m pulling for him, he’s with an organization that’s giving a opportunity to grow at his job. Can’t ask for more than that.

That’s very well put. Yzerman has been providing “upgrades” and opportunity for coaches and players. It’s up to the individual to rise to the occasion.

My opinion of Blashill has gone up and down a bit over the years, but I think I've mostly settled on "below average NHL coach." Not awful, but probably on the lower half of ordinary.

I would like to see the Red Wings make an improvement in the coaching department and bring in somebody with fresher ideas, but I've sort of moved past the point where I really care about it too much. Blash is Blash. To his credit he understands that with this roster your best chance at winning is playing an extremely boring low-event game, and that's exactly what we get. I am skeptical that he is the right guy to elevate the team to new heights, but I don't think he is a major part of the reason why the team is bad either.

Hard to believe he is the third-longest-tenured coach in the entire league. (Even harder to believe Maurice is ahead of him, but that's another story altogether.)

I think his efforts will get him a job if/when they bring in the new voice. Getting new blood on the power play is a step in the right direction. If the talent starts elevating beyond the staff, I hope it will push some changes
